Quality Discussions While Understanding Opponents

Introduction

Today, you will be learning how to have a quality discussion while udnerstanding your peers. Quite often do we get into a discussion or argeument without listening to the opponents reasoning and view points. Today we will be getting into groups and discussing topics that you chose and understand your group members points on those topics. This will prepare you for the graded discussion in front of the class on Friday.

Task

Last night, you were to find a topic that you wanted to discuss in your groups of 4. Only one of those topics will be chosen by me at random. I will put each of your topics into a hat, shake it and choose the topic. But do not be worried if your topic does not get chosen because you will have another chance for your topic to be chosen. Out of the remaining 3, I will choose another topic at random so that it will be discussed on Friday in front of the class.

Your task for today is to:

  1. Apply your knowledge from Monday and include what an effective discussion entails.
  2. Understand your opponents stance
  3. Know how to have a quality discussion while understanding your peers and rebutting effectively.

Process

Get into your groups and discuss the topic chosen at random and apply all knowledge from the "task" tab.

Evaluation

I will be walking around and listening to each group as you discuss your topic. If I find that something is going array, I will help your group.

Conclusion

Once you're done, another topic will be chosen for Friday's presentation. Prepare for that topic as a group for this discussion is graded.
