Introduction
This portal involves a Virtual fieldwork program.
This focus of this study incorporates the topic of consumer choice.
Immerse yourself in a virtual study that illustrates and provides a case analysis of the major transport options for individual users and groups in society. Videos will be provided for your data collection and activities will allow you to apply commercial understanding and problem solving capabilities toward the focus topic.
By the end of the virtual field work program, you will be able to form relationships and linkages between the syllabus content (curriculum program) related to consumer choice and the field work study.
Best wishes and enjoy your experience!
Task
You have been chosen to take part in our Virtual Field work program of study. This program will provide you with a virtual illustration of the transport environment and how various modes of transport influence the choice, decision-making and behaviour of customers.
We require expert analysis on the availability and suitability of different modes of transport provided to commuters.

Process
The Transport Hub
The major transport options for commuters that take public transport include:
- Trains
- Buses
- Taxis
Lesson 1
Watch the following clip and complete the activities below.
Activity 1 - Catching a Train
The purpose of this activity is to develop an understanding (from the perspective of the customer) of the steps, cost and time involved in catching a train.
(i) List and explain the process of catching a train
(ii) List and explain the services/facilities or directions provided to assist customers in travelling by train
Watch the following clip and complete the activities below.
Activity 2 - Catching a Bus
The purpose of this activity is to develop an understanding (from the perspective of the customer) of the steps involved in catching a bus.
(i) List and explain the process of catching a bus
(ii) List and explain the services/facilities or directions provided to assist customers in travelling by bus
Watch the following clip and complete the activities below.

Activity 3 - Catching a Taxi
The purpose of this activity is to develop an understanding (from the perspective of the customer) of the steps involved in catching a taxi.
Task
(i) List and explain the process of catching a taxi
(ii) List and explain the services/facilities or directions provided to assist customers in travelling by taxi
Activity 4 - Transport Statistics
The purpose of this activity is to be able to interpret tables and graphs in order to generate understanding of the types of transport options consumers in NSW use and for what reasons and circumstances.
Task
(i) Conduct a search on the following web address: http://www.bts.nsw.gov.au/Publications/TransFigures/TransFigures/defaul…. (This address will provide you with a list of Figures (and tables) about current transport issues and trends. You are to click and open the 4th link titled 'TransFigures: Public Transport Users in Sydney')
(i) Based on the various graphs and tables (Figures), highlight and discuss (in your own words) the reasons and circumstances commuters use trains, buses and taxi's based on the following factors:
A) Age -
B) Gender -
C) Employment Status -
D) Personal Income -
E) Purpose -
F) Distance travelled -
E) Fare type -
(i) Justify if you agree with these findings or why you disagree?
Lesson 2
Activity 1 - Calculate the cost and duration of catching various transport types
The purpose of this activity is to determine the most cost and time-efficient method of catching public transport. In order to identify the cheapest and quickest type of transport, it is important to calculate the cost of and time taken in all the major transport types and by comparing them.
Task
Imagine your car is in repairs for the next 2 weeks and you have to organise other means of transport to get to Central in Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD) tomorrow for an interview at 10:30am.Your residential address (where you will depart from) is in Parramatta, NSW.
(i) Figure 1 below is a table of the transport types with headings of cost and time taken to catch major types of transport. Your task is to calculate the cost of catching a train, a bus and a taxi and the time involved in catching all these major transport options.

To calculate the cost and time involved in catching a train - using secondary data, follow these links:
http://www.sydneytrains.info/tickets/fare_calculator
http://tp.transportnsw.info/nsw/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en
To calculate the cost and time involved in catching a bus - using secondary data, follow these links:
http://www.transportnsw.info/tickets/bus
http://tp.transportnsw.info/nsw/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en
To calculate the cost and time involved in catching a taxi: using google maps, conduct a search from your departing location to where you need to arrive to identify the distance in kilometres (km). This will be used to calculate the time and cost of your journey. You will then need to use the price sheet illustrated inside the taxi (evident in your film) to calculate the cost.
(ii) What is the most cost-efficient transport type you have identified?
(iii) What is the most time-efficient transport type you have identified?
(iv) Will the most cost (or time)-efficient transport type be always the desired option? Yes/no? Explain why or why not?
Activity 2 - other reasons for using public transport
The purpose of this activity is designed to identify and explain reasons people use different transport options depending on different circumstances.
Irrespective of the cost and time involved in catching various types of transport, people make informed decisions about using a particular transport type based on other considerations such as - personal, cultural, economic, social, demographic reasons.
For example, a person may choose to travel by taxi (instead of bus) if they live close to the city, simply by means of convenience - indicating a demographic and personal choice.
You may refer to Activity 4 in lesson 1 to support your answers and responses to this activity.
Task
(i) Your task is to identify and explain the reasons (benefits) people use different transport options and any problems encountered.
You are to consider every action involved from the start of your journey to the end.
For example, the moment you step outside your house until you reach your destination (inside your office)
Fill in the table with as many responses as you can think of. You may use secondary data to support your answers and reference to the virtual field trip video (primary data)

Lesson 3
Activity 1 - public vs private transport: other forms of transport (New private transport?)
The purpose of this activity is to identify and discuss levels of competition in the transport industry.
You are to investigate a major competitor to taxi's, one that offer people private travel as a means of transport.
Task
(i) You are required to search the following key words 'competitor of taxi' in google.
(ii) List and explain the benefits of this main competitor, compared to using a taxi (i.e. convenience)
(iii) List and explain the problems that is (or can be) encountered with using this major competitor (i.e. compliance issues)
(iv) Add this transport type in the 'Figure 1: Transport Types: Comparative Analysis (for and against)' below and insert the reasons (benefits) why people use it and the problems that you have researched.
(v) Add this transport type in the 'Figure 1: Transport Types: Cost and Time comparison table' below and using secondary data (Internet), calculate the cost of using this new private transport option and determine the time it would take to complete the journey.
Note: use the scenario created in Activity !!!!!!! to support your answer.

Activity 2 - public vs private transport: other forms of transport (INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE)
The purpose of this activity is to develop an understanding and awareness of the operation of new private transport opportunities and threats in an International market, in comparison to taxi transportation vehicles.
Task
(i) You are to use a concept mapping software tool to construct a concept map of the process, issues, policy and global support and debate in using this new form of private transport.
In your concept map, you are to include:
> one major heading (illustrating the name of the major competitor to taxi's: <new private transport type> )
> five subheadings
a) (process/operation)
b) global compliance issues/cases (listed the country and case involved)
c) International regulation (listing the country and law/policy requirements)
d) Media attention
e) Support/anti-support groups
(ii) Use secondary data (Internet, newspapers, books) to expand on these subheadings and insert them in the concept map
(iii) Save your concept map as an image on your electronic device and upload your concept map to this portal (in the space below)
Note: Make sure you make linkages between headings, subheadings and explanations
(iv) Using your interpretation of your research and findings in this activity and additional secondary research, refer to Activity 1 in Lesson 2; create a table that and compare the new form of transport to taxi transportation vehicles.
Note: Make reference to competing services offered, protection and safety provided and customer reviews toward the two transport options.
