What is Poetry?

Introduction

Poetry!

What is poetry?  Do we really understand what poetry is when we read it?  Over the past block we've read, studied and discussed poetry as a genre and literature.  We've read Shakespeare, Poe, Frost and many other classical authors, but poetry is still written popularly every day.

For instance...Roses are red, and violets are blue, do you understand--no?  Then click task to have another clue.

No?  Ok maybe not always popularly.

Task

You're mission, should you choose to rhyme it...

Read this modern example of poetry below.  This could range anywhere across the entire spectrum, so keep your minds open and try to identify rhyme scheme, aliteration, imagery and other elements of poetry that we've discussed already.

Poem 1

The secret side of me, I never let you see

I keep it caged but I can't control it

So stay away from me, the beast is ugly

I feel the rage and I just can't hold it

It's scratching on the walls, in the closet, in the halls

It comes awake and I can't control it

Hiding under the bed, in my body, in my head

Why won't somebody come and save me from this, make it end?

I feel it deep within, its just beneath the skin

I must confess that I feel like a monster

I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun

I must confess that I feel like a monster

I, I feel like a monster

I, I feel like a monster

My secret side I keep, hid under lock and key

I keep it caged but I can't control it

'Cause if I let him out he'll tear me up, break me down

Why won't somebody come and save me from this, make it end?

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin

I must confess that I feel like a monster

I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun

I must confess that I feel like a monster

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin

I must confess that I feel like a monster

I, I feel like a monster

I, I feel like a monster

It's hiding in the dark, it's teeth are razor sharp

There's no escape for me, it wants my soul it wants my heart

No one can hear me scream, maybe it's just a dream

Maybe it's inside fo me, stop this monster

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin

I must confess that I feel like a monster

I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun

I must confess that I feel like a monster

Let's be real.  None of you read that.  If you did then good job!  You get extra credit.  Now for the rest of us.  How about trying it another way?

Process

Duh Duh Duh Duh!!!!

Unexpected?

Poetry is practiced constantly even now.  It may be different from what we study in the classroom, but there are still poetic elements all around.  I'm sure all of you (cough cough) could identify the elements in the song you just listened to.

Now, onto the rest of your assigment.  It is vital that you complete it.  The entire world (aka your grade) depends on you completing this mission.

[Research five other popular songs that you listen to.  Search for their lyrics and detail the poetic elements that we have discussed in class.  Do they use rhyme scheme, aliteration, metaphor, etc?  Make sure to use a multitude of genres of music as your examples.  Rock, rap, country, hip hop.  Then write your statement and report back to base to debrief.]
