What drives cities?

Introduction

Welcome to our unit on Civilizations, We will be looking at what drives cities to develop, and how technology impacts cities.

 

We will be using the following standards:

G4.3 Patterns of Human Settlement - Describe patterns, processes, and functions of human settlement.

6.G4.3.1 Explain how people have modified the environment and used technology to make places more suitable for humans, as well as how modifications sometimes have negative/unintended consequences.

6.G4.3.2 Describe patterns of settlement and explain why people settle where they do and how people make their livings.

Overview: Essential Questions

o   What role does geography play in shaping cities/civilizations?

o   How are cities developed?

o   How is technology used in cities/civilizations?

o   What type of locations do people decide to start civilizations/settlements?

Task

You will use this web-quest to complete a 6-page paper in our 6th-grade civilization unit. The research paper will be due in 2 weeks This assignment is broken into six questions for you to explore, read about, analyze, and write about. Take notes as you read, and create an outline graphic organizer to help you pre-write. Overall, the report will have 8 pages including a cover page, a page for each question, and works cited page. When answering the questions, you will compare and contrast two different civilizations, while introducing aspects of each civilization. There should be a minimum of 4 paragraphs to answer each question: first two will introduce aspects of each civilization, the last two will contain similarities and differences of each civilization. Make sure to have fun while exploring our history!

Conclusion

You have had the chance to explore various aspects of a city through different civilizations. After this you will be wiser and smarter when it comes to the origin and purpose of cities! Once you complete this, you will be able to think critically about the present and future of our cities.
