Where Taxes Go

Introduction

How are our tax dollars spent? How much money from each paycheck is used for schools, hospitals, the military and social service programs like Social Security and Public Assistance? These are the kinds of questions you will be researching and answering today.

Task

Your task is to read the following articles and create a google slides presentation in which each slide has one RACE (Restate, Answer, Cite and Explain) response to each question. You will then present your findings to the class.

 You will need to:

Read three articles and write a RACE response for each one.

Create a visual picture for each question (you may use or create a pie chart, like the picture in the introduction). In each response, you need to include a picture

Organize your responses into a Google Slides presentation

By the end of the Webquest, you will be able to

Determine how taxes are taken out of a paycheck

Determine how federal (the country's) tax dollars are spent

Process

Step One: Read "How Do Our Taxes Pay For the Many U.S. Programs?" and write a RACE ticket answering the following question:

Identify THREE things the government pays for through taxes.

Print the response and give it to your teacher.

Step Two: Watch the following video, Where Do Our Tax Dollars Go, and create a chart that explains how our dollars are spent.

Step Three: Read the file of Where Your Tax Dollars Go and determine where your taxes go if you lived in the Town of Islip, which is 35 miles away from Riverhead. Write a RACE ticket in which you answer the following question:

Where do most of our money go when in local and homeowner's taxes?

Step Four: Read How to Explain a Paycheck's Witholdings and answer the following question: 

Identify three things that are taken out of a person's paycheck.

Conclusion

Now you have finished! Use this information to work with your group. You will create ONE google slide for each of these tasks. Then you will plan share these findings with your classmates.
