Who's the right guest speaker for our school?

Introduction

Young women today are at the forefront of activism in many areas. The global issues such as gender inequality, climate crisis and education disparities are important to all of humanity, and young people should know more about them. Who better to inspire young women and girls but some of the strongest and bravest among them - Emma Watson, Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai.

Task

Choose one of the three ladies to come and give a speech at your school. Then, make a Google Slide presentation introducing the young woman you chose and explain why you think she would be the best choice for your school.

You will make your choice based on the following:

1. The importance of the issue she is talking about. (Is it important for the students at your school? Is it discussed in Japan?)

2. How easy it would be for the students at your school to understand her speech (English accent, speed, vocabulary used, clear explanations, loud voice).

3. Who you think the students would like to see give a speech (based on their previous knowledge and familiarity with the speaker).

Process

Step 1:  Discuss the notes you made at home after reading and watching the videos about the issue.

What are the important and/or interesting things about each issue?

What language (words, phrases etc.) was difficult or confusing?

Step 2: Watch the videos, answer the questions with your partner and make notes about your answers.

             2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Elv-c3ZTkYg&ab_channel=EnglishSpeeches  Greta Tunberg

             3.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHkVw2Tnaw0&ab_channel=BeyondResist   Malala Yousafzai

Questions: What problem is each of them trying to raise awareness of?

Did she use any difficult vocabulary? What was it? How would you explain it to your classmates?

What would be the pros and cons of having her as a guest speaker at your school?

Step 3: Combine the information/ conclusions you made in Step 1 and 2, and create a Google Slides         (https://www.google.com/slides/about/)  presentation introducing your choice for a guest speaker, supported by the reasoning behind it. Use the challenging language discussed in the previous steps where appropriate. Your Slides should contain the following information:

              1. The issue background

              2. The connection between the issues and the speaker

              3. The arguments for your speaker choice

              4. Any additional information you think is necessary

Step 4: Present your Slides to the rest of the class.

Evaluation

You will evaluate your own, and your classmates' performance based on the rubric below:

Category 4 3 2 1

Your presentation is neat, but a little difficult to follow due to lack of clear organization. Your presentation is very disorganized and messy, making it difficult to follow.
Language You used language related to the issues presented correctly and consistently throughout the presentation.  You used most of the relevant language with only a few minor mistakes and inconsistencies.  The language you used was clear, but simplified, as you avoided using the more difficult vocabulary items. The language you used was confusing and hard to follow due to many mistakes made.
Arguments/Logic You presented clear and logical argument for your choice, supported with details and examples.  You presented the arguments well, but only provided a few details and other supporting evidence.  Your arguments were a bit general and not supported with details and examples.  Your arguments were confusing and illogical.
Presenting skills You spoke loudly and clearly, you used the  appropriate body language and had good transitions between slides.  You presented well, with some small pauses or minor mistakes. You paused often, seemed nervous and were unable to flow through the presentation with ease.  You spoke very softly, making it difficult to hear your presentation. You seem to have read from your presentation script most of the time.

Hopefully, discussing these issues has not only made you more aware of the problems, but also increased your ability to talk about them in English.
