Why Do We Get Sweaty? Your Body's Natural Aircon

Introduction

Have you ever noticed your shirt gets wet after playing basketball? Or your hands get sweaty before a test? Sweat feels yucky and sometimes smells bad  but did you know it actually saves your life? Your sweat is like your body's own aircon. Today, you will be a Human Body Detective and find out why we really sweat.

Task

As a team of 3-4 students, you will create one Sweat Science Poster using Canva. Your poster must include:

A) Sweat Map - Where do we sweat the most?

B) Travel Flow - How sweat is made from brain to skin.

C) Solution Card - 3 simple ways to stay clean and safe when sweating.

Process

Step 1: Understand what sweat is by reading the resources.

Step 2: Divide your research: Brain thermostat (hypothalamus), Sweat glands (eccrine & apocrine), What sweat is made of, Why cooling is needed.

Step 3: Create Your Cooling Flow

Show how your body cools down in order: First, your body gets hot. Next, your brain senses the heat. Then, your brain tells your sweat glands to work. After that, sweat comes out of your skin. Finally, the sweat evaporates and your body cools down.

Step 4: Design your poster in Canva. Make it colorful and easy for Grade 7 to understand.

Conclusion

Great job, detectives! Now you know that sweat is not gross, it is your body's way of protecting you. Without it, we would overheat. And must be remember sweat does not  really smell. The smell comes from bacteria on our skin. So next time when you sweat just remember your body is cooling you down.

Reflection:

1. What surprised you most about sweat?

2. How will you take better care of your body when you sweat?

3. What do you think happens to people who cannot sweat properly?
