Introduction

5th grade English Language Arts with Science Inquiry-Based activity: Novel Study (before/after reading activity)- Wonder 

This WebQuest is designed to build an understanding of the book "Wonder" and it's author, RJ Palacio. This activity will help students explore the author RJ Palacio and her titles of work.

In this WebQuest, you will learn about the author RJ Palacio and her titles of work including her most famous novel Wonder which, a movie has been created for alreadyThe novel "Wonder" is a story about a young boy born with facial deformities and his experience of attending public school for the first time.

This Webquest will also help enrich students understanding of Inherited and Acquired Traits. 

This WebQuest can be used before or after reading Wonder or other books in the Wonder series written by this author.

    • b. Ask questions to compare and contrast inherited and acquired physical traits. 

 

Using attached website links, your goal is to locate information to answer questions, write a summary, and create a Google Slide about the author RJ Palacio and her inspiration for writing the book Wonder. Then add two slides to discuss the physical and inherited traits of Auggie, the main character in the story. Also, include how his parents contributed to his condition.

2. Using the information you have collected, write a paragraph of what you learned about the author and her inspiration for writing the book Wonder (at least 8 to 10 sentences). Then write a paragraph of Aggie's acquired and inherited traits. 

3. Create 6 slides on Google Slide to promote this author, her New York Times bestseller, Wonder, and her titles of work to present to the class. Then create 2 slides to discuss the physical and inherited traits of Auggie. Also, include how his parents contributed to his condition.

Extended Activity- Research the facial deformity, of the character Auggie, which he was born with. Explain how this disability relates to heredity and inherited traits.
