Introduction

INTRODUCTION:

An article is a word used to modify a noun, which is a person, place, object, or idea. Technically, an article is an adjective, which is any word that modifies a noun. Usually adjectives modify nouns through description, but articles are used instead to point out or refer to nouns.

The articles in the English are the and a/an:

A and an are used when talking about something unspecific. Use a before words starting with consonant sound. Use an before words starting with vowel sound.

 

I want a pen. [any pen]

I have an umbrella. [any umbrella]

 

The is used when talking about something specific.

 

Have you washed the car? [specific car]

In many languages, articles are a special part of speech, which cannot easily be combined with other parts of speech. In English, articles are frequently considered a part of a broader speech category called determiners, which combines articles and demonstratives (such as "this" and "that").
